Berlin ist ein Stadt, der man ihre Geschichte auf den ersten Blick ansieht: Standbilder, Denkmäler und die Mauer.
Im Jahr 2009 jährt sich nicht nur der Bau der Berliner Mauer zum 48. Mal, sondern es ist ebenso das Jahr, in dem • ihr Fall exakt 20 Jahre zurückliegt. Diese zwei so gegensätzlichen Ereignisse haben die Entwicklung Berlins in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts stark beeinflusst. Letztlich haben beide Ereignisse zusammen Berlin zu einer modernen, zukunftsorientierten Weltstadt gemacht, die nie den Blick auf ihre farbenfrohe, dramatische und oftmals schwierige Vergangenheit verloren hat.
2009 ist das Jahr, in dem eine große Zahl von Veranstaltungen, Ausstellungen und Installationen an dieses Ereignis erinnern. Die Angebotspalette reicht von Fotoausstellungen, die erinnerungswürdige Momente des Jahres 1989 /1990 festhalten, bis hin zu Mauerwanderungen, die dem ehemaligen Verlauf der Mauer folgen und die letzten noch vorhandenen Originalteile zeigen. Am Alexanderplatz gibt es ab dem 7. Mai eine große Ausstellung unter freiem Himmel, die den Titel „Die friedliche Revolution“ trägt, und die dem Betrachter die einzelnen Etappen bis hin zur Wiedervereinigung und darüber hinaus näher bringen soll. Vom 1. Juni bis Ende August zeigt das •Deutsche Historische Museum eine Fotoausstellung, die den Fall der Mauer dokumentiert.
In der ersten Hälfte des Monats Juli kann man an der •East Side Gallery eine Fotoausstellung bewundern, die sich mit Kunst an der Berliner Mauer auseinandersetzt. Am 13. August jährt sich der Bau der Mauer, weshalb an jenem Tag eine ganze Reihe von Erinnerungsveranstaltungen stattfinden werden, unter anderem eine Wanderung, die am Brandenburger Tor startet.
Die alljährliche „Lange Nacht der Museen“ legt den Veranstaltungsschwerpunkt dieses Jahr ebenso auf die historischen Ereignisse des Jahres 1989, aber konzentriert sich mehr auf die Entwicklung Berlins seit dem Mauerfall. Der Höhepunkt all dieser Events ist aber wahrscheinlich das dreitägige Open-Air-Festival um das Brandenburger Tor, das vom 7. bis zum 9. November stattfindet. Dabei werden Konzerte, Straßenpartys und nachgestellte Szenen dargeboten. Berlin is a city that wears its history on its sleeve; a city of monuments, memorials and Mauer. 2009 sees not only the 48th anniversary of the erection of the Berlin Wall, but also the •20th anniversary of its fall. These two contrasting events have shaped the development of Berlin through the second half of the 20th century and have led to the evolution of a forward-looking, modern metropolis, which has not lost sight of its colourful, dramatic and oftentimes difficult past. There are a large number of events, exhibitions and installations taking place all year – ranging from photographic exhibitions documenting the momentous events of 1989/90 to tours of the former route of the Berlin Wall and the last remaining stretches of Wall in existence. At Alexanderplatz from May 7th there will be a large, free, open-air exhibition entitled The Peaceful Revolution which will trace the events leading up to the fall of the Wall and beyond to reunification in 1990. From June 1st to the end of August, the •Deutsche Historische Museum has a photographic exhibition tracing the fall of the GDR. In the first half of July the •East Side Gallery presents a photographic documentation of art on the Berlin Wall. August 13th is the anniversary of the Wall’s construction, and there are a number of commemorative events taking place, including a walking tour from the Brandenburg Gate. The annual Long Night of Museums also focuses on the historic events of 1989 but chooses to concentrate on Berlin’s evolution since then. Perhaps the highpoint of the year’s celebrations is the three day open-air Freedom Festival around the Brandenburg Gate from November 7th to 9th, featuring concerts, street parties and re-enactments.
